UGLY NOSERIDER'S TESTIMONIALS
The Ugly noserider’s testimonials that follow were randomly captured from Swaylock, Facebook and emails, and are placed in no particular order. They reflect the opinions and observations over the years from customers and surfers at large:
FROM SWAYLOCK.COM
Tom Sterne “The Ugly can be considered beautiful. I believe Longboard Magazine did a very nice piece on this design and highlighted its noseriding capabilities.”
Donald Reid I could live on the nose of the Ugly.
Monosurfer “I have wanted one (The Ugly) since the article in Longboard magazine about ten years ago. The Ugly’ is as desirable today as it ever was and I am sure it is just as functional. What a wonderful piece of history your design is. Thank You for making it.”
Aaron Williams I wonder how difficult it would be for a shaper to produce one of those now? I’d love a replica.
Christopher Anderson They were an immense hit. Then the short board revolution hit and they became almost worthless overnight. Now, valuable!
Dennis Fisher ..mine had a blue/green foam stringer and red foam tailblock. It was ugly but it worked.
Anton Maglic I still have an original with the early removable fin. Looks like the one in Dennis F’s picture, clear with a black “stringer” section down the center. Bought it for 50 bucks in ‘75 or so and it’s been kept indoors ever since…
Dennis Fisher One of the best longboards I ever had. Should have never sold it.
Danny Ballou Can still get one! https://www.uglyboards.com/
David F. Ollivier Had one broad nose & nice kick in the tail , fun board ! ?
Joey Singleton I always liked the long board for slow turns and nose riding. The short board ruined my style.
Fábio Brito It’s ugly but works!!!
Ace Thayer My Con Ugly was the last longboard I surfed in Hawaii in 1968, before the short board era.
Joshua Matthew Beautiful!
Greg Ward CLASSIC!!!!
Agustin Jimenez that was the stick to have!
FROM FACEBOOK
John Bass “…wide square-tails are where it’s at!”
Ken Kalb “Plus they are wave-catchers …”
Ray Santa Maria “Bob, my next door neighbor bought an original Ugly for $50 at a yard sale on Maui, n good shape other than sunburn. He saw me looking at it and I told him I would pay double what he paid. And he doesn’t surf. The board disappeared. He was afraid I would steal it. Oh well, I at least wanted to take a picture of it but it was gone. Shit. Aloha from Maui, Ray Santa Maria”
Bruce Southerland “Got my Ugly hangin in the garage!!!”
Jim Fitzpatrick “Beautiful Ugly.”
Jim Lucas “Just got a Con Ugly. Wondering if you have Ugly t-shirts for sale? (Traded my Pipeliner for it!)”
Eric Rinkoff As a dealer for Con Surfboards (in the 1960’s), I sold quite a few of these heavy ugly boards but they did noseride quite well…. Bay Surf Shop.
Mark Preston Gray the Con “Ugly” was an awesome noserider.
Wolf Aeon class and history in one.

Dear Bob,
Sometime in the spring of 1967 I ordered and bought a custom Ugly, which I still own. Near the tail on top of the board to the right of the stringer is stamped a series of four numbers – 4353.
Is there any way to gather more info from a bill of sale? I ordered it at Con Surfboards’ Woodland Hills shop, but by the time it was finished they had closed that shop and I had to pick it up in Santa Monica.
I recently talked to an old friend who collects surfboards and he told me if I had the serial numbers I could probably retrieve a copy of the original bill of sale.
Thank you for taking your time to read this letter.
Yours truly,
Jim Anderson

Hi Jim,
To the best of my knowledge, Con Surfboards is out of business.
Ownership changed hands four times over the course of five or six years.
I have no idea if the records were kept or not. I have my doubt for
logical reasons, which I am sure you can appreciate. Sorry to say it
seems like a lost cause.
As you may know, The Ugly and Super Ugly are my models, and I made them famous back in ’66 thru ’68. Now I own the brands and am marketing the registered trademarks in both sports equipment and apparel… Check out the web site if you get a chance.
All the best,
Bob Purvey

WOW!
Dear Bob,
What a special surprise to hear from the guy whom I wanted to be so badly I bought one of his surfboards, so I could plant on the nose of my custom Ugly and hang ten almost at will! I used to bet money that I could hang-five on any wave the other bettor chose, and I don’t remember ever losing a bet.
I did most of my surfing in the sixties and seventies at The Hut, just north of Paradise Cove in the Point Dume region of Malibu…
I now live in Sonora, CA in the foothills of the Sierras. However, my daughter is a student/surfer at UCSB, so I plan on visiting her this summer and hanging-ten in Isle Vista.
Thanks for returning my inquiry so soon. Best of luck with your business, shaping those boards that bring so much fun to all who ride them.
